Flexible Spending Accounts
A True Tax Shelter for the Working Person

Flexible Spending Accounts are allowed special treatment under section 125 of the Internal Revenue Code, Which allows employees a choice between tax-free benefits and cash compensation. Commonly referred to as Cafeteria Plans, Section 125 Plans, POP (premium only), FSA or Flex plans, these plans allow employees to use pre-tax dollars to pay for certain qualified expenses. Paying for these expenses on a pre-tax basis allows employees to increase their net take home pay and creates a FICA tax savings for the employer. A Flex plan typically includes the following benefits:

Premium Conversion or Premium Only Plan - Employee contributions for any employer-provided group health and/or dental insurance can be paid with Pre-Tax dollars.

Health Care Flexible Spending Account - Employees elect to use pre-tax dollars to reimburse any qualified out of pocket medical and/or dental expenses not covered by insurance.

Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account - Employees use pre-tax dollars for reimbursement of qualified expenses for the caring of dependents while they are at work.

Transportation Expenses - Employees pay for transit passes, commuter highway van/carpooling and qualified parking expenses with pre-tax dollars.

Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRA) - Employers controling rising Health Care costs with Consumer Driven Health Plans are protecting their employees' exposure to the associated high deductables with the help of Health Reimbursement Arrangements.

Employers receive a tax exemption reducing the taxable payroll for each dollar employees redirect to the eligible tax free benefits under the Section 125 plan. Flex Plans help employers control their costs of health and welfare benefits without limiting employee choices. Through a Flex plan, employers can offer individual tailored benefits and substantial employee tax savings at little or no cost to the company.
